Fostering transparency in global supply chains

A refined user experience and visual overhaul for one of the biggest supply chain management platforms in the Netherlands.

Introduction

“Making money and doing good can and must go together.” powerful words ImpactBuying stands by.

The company is committed to enabling sustainable buying for companies and consumers worldwide. Their online platform ensures that every link of the supply chain is properly documented. That way retailers at the end of the chain can be assured of the sustainability of their business partners.

ImpactBuying has ties with some of the Netherlands’ biggest food-retailers. That allows them to continue to make a positive impact on the food and non-food industry.

Challenge

ImpactBuying struggled to cater to its non tech-savvy users while maintaining a coherent and clean visual expression. The ImpactBuying platform was in need of an improved ease of use for first time users while remaining hospitable towards power-users.

Deliverables

Our UX Design team delivered an extensive body of research, getting to the ins and outs of what makes this seemingly mysterious set of users tick. The batch of wireframes that followed consisted of a redesign for most of the platform. We worked out the most fundamentally changing sections to achieve optimal usability enhancement.

The Visual Design team presented a tweaked color palette and typography kit, and processed these in designs for a series of the platforms’ key screens. With the delivery of the new UI kit being the cherry on top.

Legibility throughout

ImpactBuying’s users and their respective devices vary from corporate food quality managers on ultra-wide, high resolution monitors to local farmers working on a 2009 13-inch laptop. For this reason legibility played a big part in our stylistic decision-making when it came to typography. Due to its x-height and clear differentiation between lower- and upper case we settled on the variable sans serif typeface Inter to meet the legibility requirements.

A refined palette

With the constrains of having two existing brand colors we recommended tweaking the original turquoise into a more fresh and modern tone for the platform. This would make for enrichment by being able to better break up the color in multiple tones. Helping distinguish the platforms’ content while introducing a hint of sophistication.

Tables, tables and even more tables

ImpactBuying’s platform should be able to harbor immense heaps of data. For this purpose the User Interfaces could do with a with a set of improvements. Optimized filter options, new labels, alternating row tints all helped in transforming an overwhelming set of data into a comprehensive and consumable overview.

Clear instructions for a non tech-savvy audience

As we needed to design for a non tech-savvy audience, clear instructions for gathering the needed information was an essential component of the project. Our UX Design team set out for both small and large improvements by focussing on clear and established interface patterns.

I worked with Yummygum for the third time around. The outcome speaks for itself. Everyone on our team is excited about the huge improvements and beautiful results Yummygum delivered.
