A feature-heavy platform to a scalable, AI-native experience

Spider Impact had grown into a powerful strategy management platform, but the UX hadn't kept up. A growing customer base, an expanding feature set, and an integrated AI capability demanded a design partner who could work across every layer: from information architecture to interaction design to visual system.

Yummygum embedded alongside Spider Strategies' product team in a decade-long design partnership. Working in structured cycles directly with the founder, we covered UX research, information architecture, visual design, data visualization, design system management, and the full design of their integrated AI assistant, with website and deck support on top.

01

Introduction

Spider Strategies builds Spider Impact: a strategy management platform used by organizations across commercial and government sectors to align teams, track performance, and execute on strategic goals. The platform translates complex organizational data into actionable insights, serving everyone from frontline contributors to C-suite executives managing enterprise-wide strategic plans.

02

What the platform couldn’t see

Spider Impact had accumulated years of features, and the user experience showed it. Before any visual work could begin, we needed to understand how real users moved through the platform and where the friction lived. That meant customer interviews, UX audits, and deep dives into workflows that had grown organically over time. From those findings, we rebuilt the information architecture: restructuring navigation, redefining how features were grouped, and laying a foundation that could support both the current platform and everything on the roadmap ahead.

In their words

”Yummygum's approach to redesigning our app's navigation was exceptional. They went deep to understand the entire user experience, and came back with a solution that feels deceptively simple. What seems completely natural now was far from obvious at the start. That's the mark of strong UX design.“

From functional to exceptional

With the UX foundation in place, we took on the full visual redesign of Spider Impact. Version 6 introduced a new visual language across the entire platform: a refined spacing system, updated typography, a coherent color system, and a complete component overhaul. Every screen was revisited, from the home dashboard to reports to navigation, to create a product that looked as powerful as it performed. The result wasn’t a cosmetic refresh. It was a systematic rebuild that gave the development team clear, consistent rules to build against.

04

Built once, relied on forever

A platform in active development for over a decade accumulates debt: inconsistent components, outdated patterns, visual drift. We took on the Figma component library as an ongoing responsibility, migrating from Sketch, building out a token-based design system, cleaning up icon libraries, and developing AI-specific component patterns as the product evolved. The library became a living system that both teams could rely on as the platform scaled.

05

When numbers need to speak

Spider Impact is data-heavy by design, and data visualization isn’t decoration here: it’s the product. We redesigned the full chart system, covering line charts, bar charts, area charts, polar charts, linear gauges, and more. Each element was evaluated for legibility, consistency, and the specific context in which users would encounter it. We developed a chart color system and a data visualization styleboard to ensure every visual representation of data in the platform met the same bar.

06

Intelligence, by design

The biggest challenge, and the biggest opportunity, was Impact Intelligence: Spider Impact’s integrated AI assistant. This wasn’t a bolt-on feature; it was a fundamental shift in how users interact with their data. We designed the entire AI experience from scratch: the chat interface, scorecard creation via AI, the Strategy Audit with AI-driven analysis and corrective action suggestions, AI suggestion states across the platform’s components, and the processing states that make the experience feel trustworthy. All built in close cycles with the co-founder and their development team.

Results

Over a decade of collaboration, Yummygum has become Spider Strategies’ embedded design partner, contributing to every major evolution of Spider Impact. A full platform redesign, a scalable design system, a complete data visualization overhaul, and the end-to-end UX and UI of their AI assistant are all part of the product users engage with today. And the next big feature is already in development.
